Located in the Sete Rios area, in Campolide, in the heart of Lisbon, Parque Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles occupies a significant area that was once a road network complex. Its creation represented a remarkable urban transformation, converting an area of intense car traffic into a vast green lung, contributing to the renewal of the cityscape.
The park is a tribute to the landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, a central figure in the defense of nature and sustainability in Portugal. This space was designed based on his principles, which advocated for the integration of natural ecosystems into urbanism. His ideas on soil permeability, water management, and the use of native flora are the conceptual basis of this project.
Designed by the NPK studio, the park stands out for its botanical richness. It features hundreds of trees of various species, complemented by a wide selection of shrubs, herbaceous plants, and bulbs, mostly native to the Lisbon region. The ecological concern is evident in the way the soil has been made permeable and in the intelligent management of water resources, utilizing natural basins for water circulation and reuse for irrigation.
This park offers a variety of environments designed for the enjoyment of all visitors. It has ample seating areas, ideal for moments of rest, and pedestrian paths that invite long walks. For the younger ones, there are dedicated playgrounds, and for those who enjoy movement, a cycle path crosses the space, allowing for bicycle rides.
In the heart of the park, there is a work of art by the Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias. This piece, donated by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, adds a cultural dimension to the natural environment. Its presence in public space promotes a dialogue between art and landscape, highlighting the convergence of tradition with modernity.
The creation of Parque Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles represented a significant urban requalification, increasing Lisbon's green area. Its ecological design and contribution to the city's sustainability have been recognized with distinctions, highlighting the project for its innovation in water management and the transformation of urban areas into natural and resilient spaces.
