The Matinha de Queluz has reopened to the public and can be visited for free every Sunday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The Matinha is managed by Parques de Sintra-Monte da Lua, in collaboration with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests and the Municipality of Sintra, ensuring the maintenance and preservation of this natural space.
Created at the end of the 18th century, the Matinha de Queluz was originally a hunting area for the royal family, linked to the National Palace of Queluz. It stands out for its historical walls and the former leisure functions of the royalty.
With an area of approximately 21 hectares, the Matinha is a refuge for native species of plants and trees, such as cork oaks and oak trees, offering an experience of direct contact with the native vegetation of the region.
The fauna includes various species of birds such as the blackbird, robin, blackcap, and wren, in addition to some species of small mammals, making the park interesting for birdwatching and for those who appreciate nature.
Recently, the space underwent a requalification, including improvements to access and cleaning of green areas, with the aim of providing greater safety and comfort to visitors.
The improvement of the main entrance of the Matinha is planned, which will be an easier and more welcoming access point for visitors.
The Matinha serves as an important place for environmental education, raising awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity and local identity.
