This park is located in the Falagueira-Venda Nova area, in the municipality of Amadora, within the Cometna urbanization. Its creation represented an urban requalification initiative, transforming a previously underutilized area into a dynamic and distinct green space that stands out in the urban landscape. Its establishment contributes to the identity and enhancement of the surrounding area.
Inaugurated in November 2013, this public space was conceived as a tribute to Maurício de Sousa, the acclaimed creator of Monica and Friends (Turma da Mônica). Its choice for this location is not random; the park was built where the Fábrica da Cultura (Culture Factory) previously stood, a landmark that, for many years, hosted the Amadora International Comics Festival. This connection highlights Amadora's strong tradition with the Ninth Art and the cultural importance of comics in the region. An interesting detail in its construction is the use of recycled materials, some sourced from the old structures present on site.
The Comics Park (Parque da BD) spans approximately 4,000 square meters, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Monica and Friends. Along its paths and green areas, strategically placed larger-than-life character figures can be found, such as Monica, Smudge, Jimmy Five, Maggy, Biff, Zé Lelé and Chuck Billy. These sculptures, which seem to leap from the pages of a story, encourage interaction and provide fun backdrops for those exploring the park.
One of the most notable aspects of this park is its strong commitment to inclusion. The space features pioneering children's equipment in Portugal, specifically designed for children with reduced mobility. These elements allow children who use wheelchairs to play and freely enjoy the park, ensuring an accessible playful experience for everyone.
In addition to the recreational areas, the park includes a mini-library dedicated to Monica and Friends. This space offers a unique opportunity for young visitors to sit and explore the adventures of their favorite characters through reading, complementing the physical experience with Maurício de Sousa's literary universe.
