The Teles de Menezes Palace stands in the old area of São Vicente de Fora, in Lisbon. Its main entrance is on Largo de São Vicente, giving it a notable presence in this distinct part of the city. Its boundaries also extend along Rua da Voz do Operário and Telheiro de São Vicente. Its location is noteworthy as it is integrated into a historical and protected area of Lisbon, ensuring the preservation of its urban setting.
With roots extending back to the 17th century, the Teles de Menezes Palace began its life as a distinguished noble house. Over time, the building had various owners and names, also being referred to as Palácio Alfredo da Cunha or Palácio de São Vicente. Its connection to the Teles de Meneses family was consolidated in 1734, marking its primary identity.
Its structure underwent significant alterations, notably the major works at the beginning of the 20th century, under the direction of architect Nicola Bigaglia, after it was acquired by journalist Alfredo da Cunha. In the 21st century, the palace was remodelled to host events, a testament to its ability to reinvent itself and maintain its relevance in Lisbon's landscape.
Despite remodelling over time, the palace still preserves details that reveal its historical richness. Inside, one can find panelled ceilings, which evoke the grandeur of the era in which it was conceived. Another highlight is the 18th-century tile wainscoting, decorative elements that embellish the spaces and tell stories of Portuguese tile art.
An interesting particularity of the 20th-century interventions is the incorporation of decorative elements from other historical sites. Marble doors and columns, as well as tiles from old constructions, were carefully integrated into the palace, lending it an additional layer of history and uniqueness.
