Sinel de Cordes Palace

Category: Civil Architecture > Palace

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > São Vicente

Location

Located in Lisbon, in the historic area of São Vicente, Palácio Sinel de Cordes stands in Campo de Santa Clara. Its privileged position allows it to occupy a substantial part of the block, offering a glimpse into the palatial architecture of the capital. The main facade, facing south, benefits from inviting sun exposure and overlooks the surrounding square.

From its interior, the Palace offers interesting views over the National Pantheon, one of Lisbon's icons, and, further in the distance, a perspective of the Tagus River estuary, framing it within the riverside urban landscape.

Origin and Architectural Evolution

The history of Palácio Sinel de Cordes dates back to the 18th century, when it was erected by the wealthy Sinel de Cordes family, of Flemish descent, to serve as their residence in Lisbon. The family settled here after the great earthquake of 1755, which devastated much of the city, marking the palace as a testament to Lisbon's recovery and resilience.

Over the centuries, the building underwent several transformations that enriched its original design. In the 19th century, for example, the elegant balustrade and the neoclassical statues that crown the top of its facade were added, elements resembling decorations found on other important Lisbon buildings of the era. Inside, the staircase leading to the noble floor gained a remarkable neo-Gothic decoration, reflecting the tastes of a later period.

A Centre for Culture and Knowledge

Palácio Sinel de Cordes has led a multifaceted life, adapting to various uses over time. After serving as a noble residence and the seat of a foreign legation (a period during which a fire affected part of its interior, leading to careful reconstruction) it functioned as a primary school for decades, welcoming generations of Lisbon residents.

Since 2012, this 18th-century palace has gained a new and important vocation, becoming the headquarters of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. This new use reaffirms its role in the city's cultural landscape, dedicating itself to the promotion and study of architecture. The Triennale's presence ensures the conservation and revitalization of this municipal heritage, allowing its history to continue to be told and lived through new activities.
