The Palace of the Marquises of Praia and Monforte is located in the town of Santo António dos Cavaleiros, within the urban area of Bairro Almoínhas, in the municipality of Loures. Its central position in the urban fabric makes it easily visible and accessible, representing a point of interest that integrates into the daily life of the city.
This remarkable building, with origins dating back to the first half of the 19th century, began its existence as an imposing noble residence. Its history is intrinsically linked to the development of Loures, as, after the creation of the municipality in 1886, it hosted the first Municipal Council headquarters between 1887 and 1893. Later, it returned to the possession of the Marquises of Praia and Monforte, but with the passage of time, the palace faced a period of abandonment and degradation.
In the early 21st century, the Palace of the Marquises of Praia and Monforte underwent a restoration and expansion project. Today, it plays a fundamental role in the civic life of the municipality, serving as the seat of the Loures Municipal Assembly, a testament to its resilience and adaptation over the decades.
Upon observing the Palace of the Marquises of Praia and Monforte, it is possible to appreciate an interesting reconciliation between architectural past and present. Its facade maintains the original character of a 19th-century palatial house, with its characteristic wide windows and classical proportions. This historic structure was carefully integrated with modern elements during its restoration, resulting in a space that, in addition to being functional, offers a visual dialogue between eras. The contemporary intervention develops around a large session hall, which is the heart of the building today.
