Marim-Olhão Palace

Category: Civil Architecture > Palace

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Bairro Alto

Location

The Marim-Olhão Palace stands in the city of Lisbon, in the heart of the vibrant Bairro Alto. This building occupies a significant part of a block, standing out with its imposing presence between Calçada do Combro, Rua do Século, and Travessa das Mercês. Its location is central, allowing for remarkable integration into the historic urban fabric of Lisbon.

Historical Legacy

The Marim-Olhão Palace was ordered to be built in the second quarter of the 18th century by the Melo e Cunha family, who kept it in their possession for many years, until 1922. Subsequently, the palace was associated with the Counts of Castro Marim and the Marquesses of Olhão, names that partly gave it its current designation. Designed as a large-scale noble dwelling, it represented a notable urban residence for its time.

In the early 19th century, this building served as the headquarters of the kingdom's General Post Office, a phase in its history that gave it the alternative designation of Palácio do Correio Velho (Old Post Office Palace). Over the years, the palace witnessed various transformations, including restoration works after the 1755 earthquake, which caused some damage, and major renovations at the end of the 18th century, which shaped its main facade. In the 20th century, the palace was the scene of intense social and political activity, housing newspaper editorial offices and organizational headquarters, reflecting the dynamism and changes of Lisbon society.

Architectural Aspects

The architecture of the Marim-Olhão Palace, of Baroque influence, reveals a robust and well-defined main facade, with six floors that give it a particular monumentality. The limestone stonework, present on the ground floor and the pilasters that rhythm the structure, contrasts with the painted render of the upper floors, creating an appealing visual interplay.

Observing the details, one can notice the presence of chest windows with wrought iron railings and, on the noble floor, balconies with stone balustrades, some adorned with sculptural compositions that enrich the facade. Inside, the rooms maintain the typical organization of large noble palaces. Elements such as a room with a peculiar layout, animated by monochrome tile panels with rural scenes, and a chapel with a barrel vault, are of particular interest and offer a glimpse into the life and refinement of Lisbon's former nobility.
