The Palace of the Copeiros-Mor is located in the Santa Engrácia area, in Lisbon, more precisely on Rua de Santa Apolónia. Its noble portal, which serves as the main entrance, bears the number 53. The strategic position of the palace, which once had the Tagus River reaching its gardens to the east and a private pier to the south around the mid-19th century, highlights its former direct connection to the river and fluvial traffic.
Primarily known as the Palace of the Copeiros-Mor, this building is also referred to by other historical designations, such as Palácio Coimbra, or even, more curiously, Palácio do «Braço de Prata» (Silver Arm Palace). Each of these names evokes different periods or aspects of its long existence in Lisbon. The original designation refers to the role of Copeiro-Mor (Chief Cupbearer), a significant position at court, responsible for wine service. Its historical location by the Tagus riverbank, with the presence of a landing stage that allowed direct access by river, underscores the river's importance in the city's dynamics and in the life of this particular palace.
In its architectural design, the Palace of the Copeiros-Mor is defined by a quadrangular base structure, which gives it a solid and distinct presence. The building's main facade faces west, standing out as its most prominent element. This arrangement highlights its grandeur in the urban landscape of Rua de Santa Apolónia, reflecting the typical aesthetics and design of noble residences of the era.
