The Palácio da Porcalhota is located in Quinta Nova, an urban area within the municipality of Amadora. This remarkable building, dating back to the 18th century, is a testament to the region's history. Popularly known as Palácio da Porcalhota, it was a strategic transit point in past eras. It is believed to have served as a resting place for Court officials and an inn for their mounts during long journeys between Lisbon and the royal palaces of Queluz, Mafra, or Sintra. Its existence underscores the importance of routes and support infrastructure for travelers of the time.
In addition to its most common designation, the palace is also referred to as Casa do Infantado. This name alludes to the possibility that it was part of the properties of the Casa do Infantado, a vast heritage inherited by the second sons of the Portuguese royal family after the Restoration of 1640. Many of these lands were assets confiscated from nobles deemed disloyal to the crown, adding a layer of complexity and intrigue to its provenance.
Over the centuries, the Palácio da Porcalhota adapted to different functions. In the 20th century, for example, the building housed the Republican Guard Barracks and, later, an Official School.
