This remarkable palace is located in the Santos-o-Velho area, a historic and distinctive district in the city of Lisbon. Its urban setting is of particular relevance, as it stands out in its surroundings, isolated and framed by a private garden enclosed by a wall and railings. This position grants it an imposing and visible presence in the urban landscape.
The building exhibits an eclectic style, characteristic of the second half of the 19th century, the period in which it was built. Its structure has a quadrangular plan, with a single body developed in a compact manner, assuming a roughly cubic volume. The main facade, oriented northwest, is composed of three distinct sections: the central one, which rises and stands out, is punctuated by pilasters and houses an imposing portal. This portal is preceded by a fan-shaped staircase and features an interesting trefoil arch, flanked by two chest-high windows with similar arches and mullions. The lateral sections display rectangular windows on both floors, and the entire ensemble is crowned by an elegant balustrade punctuated by plinths and pinnacles, giving it a noble silhouette. In its conception, materials such as mixed masonry, limestone stonework, painted render, cast iron, wood, and painted stucco were employed.
Built in the second half of the 19th century to serve as the residence of Júlio Pinto Leite, 2nd Viscount and 1st Count of Olivais, this palace has undergone several transformations throughout its existence. From a stately home, it adapted to different functions, including becoming the property of the German State at the beginning of the 20th century, with adaptation works. Subsequently, after World War II, it came into the possession of the Allied powers and, during the 1950s, hosted diplomatic services. Its rich and multifaceted history reflects the importance and adaptability of this construction over time. The building and its grounds, including the existing tree species, have been classified as a Monument of Public Interest, recognizing its heritage and historical value.
