Located in Quinta do Lambert, an area of the city of Lisbon, the Palacete Norton de Matos is situated on Alameda das Linhas de Torres. Its urban position, although central, benefits from the tranquility provided by a garden that extends to the south and east of the building. This setting allows its presence to be appreciated harmoniously within the urban environment.
Built between the 18th and 19th centuries, the palacete is an expressive example of the Baroque and Rococo styles. It features an irregular plan and a stepped volume, with roofs of varying heights that give it a distinctive profile. On its main facade, two entrance portals stand out, crafted with a late-Baroque language, rich in carved stonework details. The building's walls display varied coverings, from industrial patterned tiles at the base to painted plaster on the upper floors, complemented by stonework quoins that reinforce its structure and aesthetics.
The Palacete Norton de Matos is also a place with a strong connection to 20th-century Portuguese history. It was the residence of General José Mendes Ribeiro Norton de Matos (1867-1955), a prominent political figure. Interestingly, it was from this very palacete that the General announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic in 1949, an event that, although later withdrawn, marks its importance as a stage for significant moments in the public life of the time. This residence carries with it the memories of an era and one of its protagonists.
