Category: Civil Architecture > Manor House / Stately Mansion

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > São Mamede

Location

Palacete Falcarreira is strategically positioned in Lisbon, in the São Mamede area, connecting Largo do Rato and the emblematic Avenida da Liberdade. This is an area of particular distinction in the city, known for its beauty and the presence of other palaces and historic buildings. The building benefits from a double exposure, with façades facing both Rua do Salitre and Rua Vale do Pereiro, harmoniously integrating into the urban fabric of high heritage value.

A Residence with History

Dating from the second half of the 19th century, more precisely the last quarter, Palacete Falcarreira was designed to be a modern bourgeois residence of its time, reflecting the lifestyle of wealthy Lisbon families. Throughout its history, it was the residence of notable figures, including a Count of Carnide and, later, the Viscount of Falcarreira, Pompílio Augusto Gonçalves de Azevedo Franco. These former owners contributed to its aura of distinction and historical value, making it a testament to 19th-century Lisbon life.

Striking Architectural Features

Palacete Falcarreira is a remarkable example of eclectic architecture with strong neoclassical influences. Its main façade, facing Rua do Salitre, is elegantly divided into three sections, with the central one standing out, crowned by a triangular pediment that confers an air of solemnity and grandeur to the whole. The balconies, with their delicate wrought iron work, add a touch of refinement and beauty. Inside, attention is drawn to the entrance in worked stone and stucco, as well as the main staircase, illuminated by a skylight that floods the space with natural light, highlighting the elaborate stucco ceilings that adorn the rooms.

A Preserved Heritage

Recognized for its high heritage and architectural value, Palacete Falcarreira has been the subject of careful interventions over the years, with the aim of preserving its essence and original elements. The most recent rehabilitation took care to revitalize the entire building, taking advantage of the architectural elements that define it, while adapting it to current standards. This conservation effort ensures that the Portuguese architectural tradition, expressed in the grandeur and details of the palace, continues to be a point of interest and admiration in Lisbon's urban landscape.
