The Palacete dos Condes de Monte Real is located in the Lapa neighbourhood, a distinguished residential area in the city of Lisbon. Built on a hillside with a steep slope, the palace occupies a well-defined urban block, with access from several streets such as Rua de São Domingos à Lapa and Rua de Buenos Aires, contributing to the architectural landscape of this part of the capital.
The construction of the Palacete dos Condes de Monte Real dates back to the early 20th century, with significant works taking place between 1900 and 1918. It was built to the design of architect José Luís Monteiro, at the initiative of Artur Porto de Melo e Faro, the Count of Monte Real, who intended to create his residence there. The palace's layout is inspired by the planimetric solutions of 18th-century rural palaces, featuring an "L" shape that integrates living quarters, a courtyard, and a private chapel. Its main facade, facing northwest, displays an imposing portal with a perfect round arch, flanked by columns, and balcony windows with metal railings, elements that lend grandeur to the building.
Inside the palace, the decorative richness is notable, highlighted by the abundant presence of tile panels and woodwork. The tiles, from various periods and styles, adorn almost all spaces, including rooms and circulation areas. It is possible to observe 17th-century examples in blue and yellow tones, monochromatic Baroque panels with religious scenes in the chapel, bucolic and architectural representations, and also polychrome tiles with Rococo frames that integrate medallions with scenes of oriental inspiration. Alongside the tiles, the boiseries, or carved woodwork, enrich ceilings, stair railings, and interior window frames, reflecting a high-quality technical and artistic execution. Some ceilings also reveal delicate murals with vegetal and floral motifs.
An integral part of the palace, the private chapel has a longitudinal plan, with a nave and chancel, and is complemented by a bell tower. Its main elevation includes a curved lintel portal and a niche with the figure of Our Lady of the Conception. Inside the temple, one observes a barrel-vaulted ceiling, tiled panels, and a polychrome and gilded carved altarpiece. Outside, a rectangular courtyard articulates the various bodies of the building, and an elevated terrace offers a distinct outdoor space. Two ornamental fountains contribute to the beauty of the ensemble, one of them covered with 17th-century carpet tiles and another in stonework, decorated with the representation of three fish.
Throughout its history, the Palacete dos Condes de Monte Real has served various functions, initially being a family residence. After a period in which it housed the headquarters of institutions, the palace underwent meticulous restoration in 2018, which aimed to preserve its original characteristics and decorative elements. Currently, the building has become a vibrant cultural centre. It is the headquarters of the International Federation for Choral Music and the International Cultural Center (ICC), hosting artists and musicians from around the world. The palace hosts various international cultural and artistic events, actively contributing to the promotion of music and the arts in Lisbon.
