The Palacete de São Bento is located in the heart of Lisbon, more precisely in the quiet and distinguished area of Lapa, belonging to the parish of Estrela. It is situated in a secluded position, behind the imposing Palácio de São Bento, seat of the Assembly of the Republic. This privileged location grants it an atmosphere of centrality and, at the same time, discretion, nestled within an urban fabric of particular charm and rich history.
This late 19th-century building, constructed in 1877 by Joaquim Machado Cayres to be his residence, has a history intertwined with significant moments of Portuguese governance. After having been, for a brief period, a religious college, the property was acquired by the State in 1937 to serve as the official residence for the head of government. From May 1938, the Palacete de São Bento became the stage for political decisions, undergoing various interventions over the decades to adapt to its new and demanding functions, reflecting the country's transformations.
The Palacete de São Bento maintains its 19th-century building identity, despite notable renovations. One of the most distinctive architectural elements is the monumental staircase, designed to connect the palace directly to the parliament gardens, creating a visual and functional link. Inside, the ground floor hosts protocol rooms, such as the Reception Room and the Audience Room, and a Dining Room with garden views. These gardens, covering a considerable area, offer a tree-lined refuge, with a swimming pool and a pergola, contributing to a serene and functional environment. The presence of calçada portuguesa (Portuguese pavement) in the exterior pathways is another detail that embellishes the property, adding a touch of traditional art.
Currently, the Palacete de São Bento is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Portugal, serving as a vital center of the country's administration. Important executive meetings are held here, and various national and international figures are received. The building and its spaces have been adapted for greater operationality and contemporary demands, including the implementation of energy efficiency solutions, such as a micro wind turbine and photovoltaic panels, which underscore the commitment to sustainability.
