The Olivais Educational Farm is located in Lisbon, in the parish and urban area of Olivais Sul. Integrated into the capital's urban fabric, this farm represents a unique meeting point between the city environment and the rural world. Its position offers an interesting contrast, allowing visitors a countryside experience without leaving the city limits, in an environment that serves as an embassy to the rural world.
Since its inauguration in April 1996, this farm has had the mission of bringing visitors, particularly families and children, closer to the life and traditions of the countryside. In a space of approximately two hectares, it is possible to observe and learn about the daily tasks of a farm and the importance of contact with nature and animals, cultivating a connection to the rural world within the city.
The Olivais Educational Farm is home to a wide range of animals, which visitors can observe up close in pens and stables. Among them are birds such as parakeets, pheasants, chickens, roosters, quails, and peacocks, and larger animals like sheep, pigs, donkeys, cows, goats, billy goats, geese, mallards, Muscovy ducks, and even a black swan. This place allows direct contact with rural fauna, contributing to the understanding of country life. It is important to respect the animals' diet, so feeding them is not allowed.
In addition to the meadows where the animals roam, the farm has various spaces dedicated to education and leisure. Visitors can explore the vegetable garden and orchard, where vegetables and fruits are grown, or stroll through the aromatic and medicinal plant garden. There are also areas such as the greenhouse and workshops, which complement the rural experience. In the surrounding area, there are lawn spaces and recreational equipment, such as a play cart and toys near the "Animals' Walk of Fame," providing moments of relaxation. The tiles scattered throughout the farm tell stories, and the curious "Pacifier Tree" and scarecrows add a peculiar touch to the environment.
The Olivais Educational Farm is a living center of rural traditions, where ancient practices are (re)experienced. Through accessible experiences, visitors can come into contact with farming, work in the vegetable gardens and orchards, and daily tasks related to domestic animals. Processes such as the bread cycle, from sowing to the wood-fired oven, and wool transformation, from sheep shearing, are demonstrated. The farm also explores the power of plants in the "Rural Pharmacy," sharing traditional knowledge about their use. Throughout the year, the place marks important dates in the rural calendar and themes such as the environment or health, with dedicated programs that promote the knowledge and culture of country life.
