The Gardens of the Marquês de Pombal Palace are located in the heart of the town of Santo Amaro de Oeiras, within the area known as "Jardins" (Gardens), in the municipality of Oeiras. Their central position in the town makes them accessible, benefiting from their proximity to the Ribeira da Laje, whose waters and fertile soil were crucial for their original conception.
This remarkable green space is an example of Portugal's valuable 18th-century heritage. The gardens, together with the palace, are classified as a National Monument, reflecting the grandeur of the era. They were conceived under the vision of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquês de Pombal, and their design is attributed to the Hungarian architect Carlos Mardel, who played a significant role in the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. They represent an expression of the Enlightenment culture, where leisure was combined with cultivation.
The gardens feature a design with rigorous geometrism, uniting the recreational and productive aspects of the old estate. Along the walk, one discovers the beauty of unique architectural and artistic elements. Of particular note is the Poets' Cascade, also known as the Noble Grotto, a point of great architectural value with its grotto configuration adorned by busts of poets such as Camões and Virgil. One can also find statues, other cascades, and a rich and diverse biodiversity, complemented by artistic pavement.
The Gardens of the Marquês de Pombal Palace are an invitation to a peaceful stroll and contemplation. They provide a relaxing environment, ideal for those seeking a moment of tranquility amidst the urban dynamism. Historically, this was a stage for cultural events, such as plays, ballets, and musical performances, a tradition that endures and keeps the gardens as a space for dynamism and gathering.
