The estate dates back to the late 17th century and was profoundly transformed in the 18th century when Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the future Marquis of Pombal, inherited the properties from his uncle.

During this period, under the guidance of the Hungarian architect Carlos Mardel, significant works were carried out to enhance and beautify the gardens and structures of the estate. The Taveira Waterfall is a testament to this period of prosperity, reflecting the baroque aesthetic and the scenographic taste characteristic of the time.
