Situated in the Vila Chã Urbanization, in the locality of Mina, Amadora municipality, the Penedo Windmill Museum Centre is integrated into an urban area. Its position allows it to be observed as an enduring element in the landscape, contrasting its rural heritage with the surrounding urban development.
This is the only windmill in the municipality of Amadora that remains preserved and accessible, standing out as an element of unique patrimonial value. The mill represents a visible testimony to the once strong milling activity that characterized the region, marking the presence of the vast Pre-industrial Milling Belt of Lisbon.
Recovered in 1998, the mill features a fixed tower structure, circular in shape, built with the basaltic stone typical of the region. It is divided into two floors, the ground floor and the milling floor, interconnected by an internal staircase. Elements such as the entrance and windows were made of limestone, and inside it is possible to observe the iron fittings, essential pieces for fixing the mill's cap.
The windmills, which today are mostly ruins, still punctuate the Amadora landscape, evoking a period when flour production was a crucial economic activity. The Amadora region was part of a vast complex, comprising over a hundred mills, responsible for an annual production of tens of thousands of tons of flour. This production was fundamental to supply the great bread deficit that then existed in the capital, Lisbon.
