The museum is located in the heart of Lisbon, in the vicinity of Praça dos Restauradores. It is housed in the Palácio Foz, a historic 18th-century building that provides a setting of significant architectural prominence in the city's urban landscape.
Inaugurated in 2012, this space was created to commemorate the centenary of Portugal's participation in the Olympic Games. Its primary purpose is to showcase the trajectory of sport in the country, celebrating the achievements and evolution of various disciplines over time, from their origins to the present day.
Inside, visitors can explore a diverse collection that covers the history of Portuguese sport. There is an area dedicated to the Olympic heritage, with elements that evoke national participation in the Games, including historical posters and torch replicas. It is possible to see personal items of prominent sporting figures and equipment used by champions like Rosa Mota, or even pieces related to notable achievements such as those of João Garcia in mountaineering. These items tell stories of dedication, overcoming challenges, and success.
The museum also houses the National Sports Library, a resource of relevance for research and sports history, boasting a vast collection of specialized publications. A notable item in this collection is a copy of the book "De Arte Gymnastica," published in 1577, recognized as one of the oldest works dedicated to sport worldwide, possessing undeniable literary and historical value.
