The Hipólito Cabaço Municipal Museum is located in the town of Alenquer, within the area known as Alto da Boavista.
It is housed in the former residence of the archaeologist Hipólito Cabaço, a historic building now known as Casa da Torre (House of the Tower). The surroundings include a courtyard and a garden, contributing to a pleasant environment within the urban context of the town.
This archaeological museum owes its existence and name to Hipólito Cabaço, a fundamental figure in the archaeology of the Alenquer region. This amateur archaeologist dedicated a large part of his life, in the first half of the 20th century, to the prospection and collection of archaeological remains throughout the municipality.
It was his extensive private collection of artefacts, later acquired by the Alenquer Municipal Council, that served as the basis for the creation of this museum space, with the aim of preserving and making known this valuable collection.
The museum's collection consists of pieces from various archaeological sites in the municipality of Alenquer, covering a vast period of time. Visitors can discover artefacts that testify to human presence in the region from Prehistory and Protohistory.
The exhibition covers different eras, including the Roman, Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary periods, offering a perspective on the historical and cultural evolution of the area over the centuries.
The museum is located in Casa da Torre, a building with its own significance as it was Hipólito Cabaço's residence. Its adaptation into a museum space took into account the conservation of the original structure, as well as the creation of modern conditions for visitors.
In the different rooms, in addition to the exhibition of archaeological pieces, content on the life and work of the archaeologist who gave the museum its name is presented, as well as elements that contextualize Casa da Torre itself. The visit is complemented with resources such as a film and an interactive screen, and there are spaces designed so that younger visitors can have a fun experience related to archaeology.
