The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is located in the Campo Pequeno area, in Lisbon. It is integrated into a large complex that includes green spaces and cultural buildings, creating a tranquil and inviting environment. Its position in the city offers easy access, being situated in a well-known area of the Portuguese capital.
This museum was born from the vision and passion of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, an industrialist of Armenian origin who chose to live in Portugal. Throughout his life, he amassed a vast and remarkable art collection. It was by his testamentary wish that this collection was made accessible to the public, giving rise to this cultural institution in Lisbon.
The museum's permanent collection consists of thousands of pieces that offer a diverse panorama of art history, from antiquity to the 20th century. It includes artifacts from Ancient Egypt, Greco-Roman and Islamic art, as well as works from China and Japan. European art is also represented, encompassing painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, with a focus on works by masters from different periods and schools.
The building that houses the museum was designed by Portuguese architects with the intention of harmoniously integrating it into the landscape. The building's lines and its layout seek to dialogue with the surrounding gardens, allowing natural light and views of the exterior to accompany the visiting experience. This integration between the exhibition space and nature contributes to a calm environment conducive to contemplation.
