The Centenary Monument of Aeronautics is located in Verdelha, in Alverca do Ribatejo, within the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. This landmark is strategically positioned on an important access roundabout, in the vicinity of major road arteries such as the Autoestrada do Norte (A1) and the CREL (Circular Regional Exterior de Lisboa). Its location grants it significant visibility to those travelling through this important connecting and transition area, which marks the entrance to the locality.
This monument was erected to celebrate Alverca do Ribatejo's deep and historical connection to aviation in Portugal. Its centerpiece is an impressive Northrop T38 aircraft, donated by the Portuguese Air Force. The imposing presence of this aircraft signifies a century of aeronautical evolution, highlighting the central role the region played in the development of national aviation and in the collective memory of its inhabitants.
Alverca is widely recognized as the true cradle of aviation in Portugal. It was in this locality that, in 1918, the military aerodrome was established, activated the following year, and where the historic General Aeronautical Material Workshops (OGMA) were born, marking the beginning of the Portuguese aeronautical industry. Alverca also served as the country's first international landing field, functioning as Lisbon's main airport until 1940. The monument visible today pays homage to this rich heritage and the permanent influence of aeronautics on local and national identity.
