The Ludovice Palace stands majestically in the city of Lisbon, in a prime location known as the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. Its commanding position gives it a notable presence on the city's skyline, situated at the top of the Glória Funicular, one of the Portuguese capital's iconic lifts.
This remarkable building was erected in the 18th century, with its construction completed in 1747. Interestingly, it was built using leftover materials from the extensive works of the Mafra National Palace. Originally conceived as the residence for the wealthy Ludovice family, it remained in their possession until the 19th century.
Over time, the palace underwent several transformations and uses. In the late 19th century, it was acquired by Baron da Costa Veiga, who introduced significant alterations to its structure. In 1890, the building became the Police Headquarters. Later, in 1941, it passed into the ownership of the Tranquilidade Insurance Company. Between 1944 and 1945, the ground floor underwent a major renovation, carried out by architect Jorge Segurado, transforming it to house the Solar do Vinho do Porto.
The palace's design is attributed to João Frederico Ludovice, a figure whose vision was reflected in the application of architectural innovations for the time in Lisbon. A standout feature is the introduction of the anti-seismic wooden cage technique on the upper floors, a construction method that, due to its effectiveness, would later be widely adopted in the reconstruction of the Pombaline Downtown after the 1755 earthquake, setting a notable precedent in civil engineering.
Its architecture reflects the Baroque style, but with a unique approach that distinguished it in the Lisbon of its day. The main façade is remarkably homogenous and imposing, characterized by its balanced composition. The palace comprises two noble floors, in addition to shops on the ground floor and rental floors. One of the distinctive elements is the sinuous balcony on the noble floor, as well as the ornamentation of the windows, which feature elaborate pediments. The main façade, particularly in its central section and on the third and fourth floors, is one of the most striking and noteworthy aspects of the building.
