The Chapel of the Convento dos Cardais, also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception of the Cardais, is located in the Misericórdia area of Lisbon.
It was founded by D. Luísa de Távora in the 17th century, with the aim of housing nuns of the Order of Discalced Carmelites.
The Chapel is one of the few historical buildings in Lisbon that survived the 1755 earthquake, remaining practically intact.
The Chapel features a Baroque style, with a sober exterior, but with a richly decorated interior. This style is known for its grandeur and exuberance.
The interior of the Chapel stands out for its gilded woodcarving and blue and white tiles, which form a typical combination of Portuguese art. The tiles depict scenes from the life of Saint Teresa of Ávila and are of Dutch origin, dating back to 1688.
The paintings in the Chapel follow the guidelines of the Council of Trent, which aimed to inspire faith through art. Works by artists such as António Pereira Ravasco and André Gonçalves are exhibited in the church.
The high altar is an example of the national style, with a tabernacle decorated with angels and religious symbols, representing faith and resurrection.
Since 1990, the Chapel and other spaces of the convent have been open to the public, offering guided tours, temporary exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events.
The Chapel has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1943 and remains active with religious and cultural functions.
