The Banhos de São Paulo (São Paulo Baths) are located in the São Paulo neighborhood, in the parish of Misericórdia, in Lisbon.
The history of the Banhos de São Paulo begins in 1829 with the discovery of a source of chloride and sulfurous waters. This spring, found during works in Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square), was known for its curative properties. Initially, it served the humblest classes and had a shed to shelter visitors.
In 1850, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (Holy House of Mercy of Lisbon) decided to build a more dignified spa, starting the construction of the Banhos de São Paulo, which were designed by the architect Pedro José Pézerat. The building was erected about 550 meters from the original source.
The Banhos de São Paulo building is a remarkable example of 19th-century architecture and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982.
Today, the Banhos de São Paulo are the headquarters of the Ordem dos Arquitectos (Order of Architects), preserving their historical and cultural importance in the city.
Tourists can appreciate the architecture of the building and learn more about the history of the baths and their relevance to the social life of Lisbon.
