The Bica Funicular is located on Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, in the Bica neighborhood of Lisbon. It connects Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz, crossing one of the steepest slopes in the city.
This funicular began operating on June 28, 1892, and is owned by Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa.
The two carriages are identical, with three compartments on different levels and capacity for 23 passengers (9 seated and 14 standing). Entry and exit are through doors with pantographic gates.
The route is 283 meters long on a double track, embedded in the pavement. The lower entrance is from inside a building on Rua de São Paulo.
About 70 meters of the route are shared with automobile traffic, a unique feature among funiculars in Portugal. Traffic is only allowed in the ascending direction and is reserved for residents, as it is a historic neighborhood.
The Bica Funicular is a symbol of the city and was classified as a National Monument in February 2002, due to its historical and cultural value.
In 2010, the artist Alexandre Farto (Vhils) carried out an intervention on the funicular, covering it with a reflective metallic film. In 2013, the cabins were decorated with patterns inspired by Portuguese cobblestone pavement.
The funicular has an annual maintenance period, usually in winter. It has also been temporarily closed on several occasions, such as in 2012, due to work on Calçada da Bica.
The Bica neighborhood is a historic area with narrow and picturesque streets, where traffic is limited. The funicular's route offers a unique view of this typical Lisbon neighborhood, being an authentic city experience.
