Category: Nature > Park

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Graça

Location

The Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Monte is located in the historic Graça district of Lisbon. Situated on one of the city's highest points, this spot offers a sweeping perspective of the urban landscape. Its position grants it a comprehensive view, extending across various areas of the Portuguese capital.

From here, the gaze reaches a vast area of the city. To the south, one can spot the Tagus estuary and the 25 de Abril Bridge, as well as the imposing São Jorge Castle and the layout of the Pombaline Downtown. To the west, the hills that house Bairro Alto are visible, and on clear days, the Monsanto Forest Park. To the north, the horizon reveals Avenida Almirante Reis and the transition to more contemporary Lisbon.

A Window onto Lisbon's History

This viewpoint is not merely an observation point but also a place with a deep connection to Lisbon's history. Formerly known as Monte de São Gens, it is here that, according to tradition, the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, set up his military camp for the conquest of Lisbon in 1147. The presence of the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora do Monte, which stands here, dates back to those medieval times, serving as a testament to the site's antiquity and importance.

The original hermitage, dedicated to Saint Gens, a bishop said to have been martyred on this mount, was founded in the 12th century. Although the earthquake of 1755 left the building in ruins, the current chapel is a reconstruction from 1796, keeping alive the memory and spirituality of the place. In the viewpoint area, a tile panel, placed in the mid-20th century, marks the various landmarks that can be admired, functioning as a visual guide through Lisbon's rich urban and historical tapestry.

The Chapel and its Traditions

The small Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte is a central element of this viewpoint, characterized by its baroque architectural typology. Inside, visitors will find a gilded wood carved altarpiece in the Joanine style, framing the image of Nossa Senhora do Monte, flanked by Saint Augustine and Saint Gens. Also noteworthy are Rococo tile panels, an Indo-Portuguese ivory Christ, and a nativity scene with pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries, which enrich the devotional atmosphere.

One of the chapel's most notable features is the legendary Chair of Saint Gens, a stone chair covered in marble. Legend has it that pregnant women would sit in it for an easier childbirth, a practice dating back centuries and which Queen D. Maria Ana of Austria, wife of D. John V, is said to have followed in 1711. This symbolic tradition highlights the cultural and popular value associated with this space.

A Nook for Contemplation and Relaxation

The Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Monte offers a distinct ambiance, marked by a notable tranquility that contrasts with the city's pace. The surrounding landscaped area, with the presence of trees such as cypresses, olive trees, and stone pines, provides inviting shaded spots. There are various benches where people can sit and enjoy the scenery in peace.

This location is particularly appreciated for its serene atmosphere, which invites prolonged observation and reflection. The golden light of late afternoon, reflecting on the city's rooftops and the Tagus estuary, creates a scene of great beauty, making the viewpoint an ideal spot to experience the sunset in Lisbon.
