The Luneta dos Quartéis Viewpoint is situated in the extensive green area of the Monsanto Forest Park, in the Benfica area of Lisbon. Its elevated position on the Monsanto Hills places it within one of the capital's greenest areas, offering a refuge from the urban bustle.
This observation point is located in the northwestern part of the park, in a notable clearing, surrounded by the dense pine vegetation typical of the Monsanto forest landscape.
The history of this viewpoint dates back to the late 19th century, a period when the Monsanto Hills, being one of Lisbon's highest points, were chosen for the construction of various military structures. These buildings were intended for the city's defense against potential attacks.
The Luneta dos Quartéis Viewpoint is a vestige of these fortifications, having been subsequently adapted and transformed for civilian use between the 1930s and 1940s. Its existence thus reflects an interesting transition from a strategic lookout post to a recreational site.
The view provided by this viewpoint differs from the traditional panorama of Lisbon's historic center. The perspective focuses primarily on the suburban areas west of the capital, encompassing the parish of Alfragide, in the municipality of Amadora, and other adjacent areas.
From this point, one can predominantly observe the large commercial centers and residential areas that characterize the metropolitan surroundings, offering a glimpse of urban expansion beyond the city's heart.
The viewpoint area consists of a paved area, where the ruins of an old structure, which once functioned as a restaurant, are visible, along with the wall that demarcates the observation point. All of this is situated within a clearing surrounded by pine trees.
It is evident that the viewpoint shows signs of age and less maintenance, with some areas revealing a certain degree of neglect. This condition lends it a more rugged character and invites attention during the visit, distinguishing it from other, more well-maintained viewpoints in the city.
