Located in the parish of Mina de Água, in the municipality of Amadora, Portugal.
Part of a necropolis composed of three collective tombs excavated in limestone outcrops. These caves are an example of a Mediterranean funerary tradition from the late Neolithic period.
The caves were found and excavated by Manuel Heleno in 1932.
National Monument since 1936 (Decree No. 26235).
Access is via a corridor leading to a burial chamber, closed by limestone slabs. The entrance portal has rounded shapes.
Used initially in the Neolithic and later in the Chalcolithic period. It is unknown whether the buried belonged to the same village or specific social group.
It is presumed that the bodies were placed in a fetal position, accompanied by offerings, following the cultural practice of the time.
Includes bones, ceramics, lithic and metallic materials, limestone idols, schist plaques, and lunulae. These artifacts are in the National Museum of Archaeology in Lisbon and are occasionally exhibited in exhibitions.
