The Aqueduto da Gargantada (Gargantada Aqueduct) is situated between Carenque, in Amadora, and the National Palace of Queluz, in Sintra.
It was built between 1790 and 1794 with the objective of bringing water to the Royal Palace of Queluz.
It begins on the left bank of the Carenque stream and initially follows an underground route. Then, it emerges above ground with fourteen arches, ending in a breather, and continues underground until the Palace of Queluz.
It stands out for its fourteen perfectly rounded arches and an additional arch at a lower level, where the Carenque stream passes.
Since 1978, the Aqueduto da Gargantada has been considered a Property of Public Interest.
It was essential for supplying water to the Palace of Queluz, an important monument in the region.
Located in an easily accessible area, it is a point of interest for visitors to Amadora and Sintra, ideal for those who appreciate engineering works and history.
