Situated in the center of the village of Alcoentre, in the municipality of Azambuja, this church stands in a square where traditional housing creates a tranquil setting. In the vicinity, small paved streets and a gentle rural environment enhance the presence of the building.
The building is slightly set back from the main road, with a wide staircase that invites approach and allows enjoyment of the facade's view against the blue sky on clear days.
Documented since the 12th century as a parish institution, the Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Purificação was rebuilt from the mid-16th century onwards. Its connection to royal patronage and the family of D. Afonso Sanches reveals the temple's political and religious role over the centuries.
On the site where the "new church" stands today, there was, since the 14th century, the tomb chest of the first lord of Alcoentre. The rebuilding process, initiated around 1530, extended over several centuries, culminating in the final consecration of the temple only in 1953. This succession of works reflects the evolution of the spiritual needs of the local communities.
The facade is distinguished by its white rendering, framed by ashlar pilasters and topped by a triangular pediment. The full-width staircase develops in wide steps, while the bell tower, with its geometric tile roofing, creates an interesting contrast of textures and gives the ensemble a particular identity.
Inside, the single nave is illuminated by the side altars and the baptistery, highlighting the main altarpiece in carved stone, with contained but strong sculptural modulation. The ensemble combines serenity and solidity, inviting a leisurely appreciation of the forms and details that compose the sacred space.
