The Vale Fundão Urban Park is located in the eastern part of the city of Lisbon, nestled in the Amendoeiras neighborhood, in the parish of Marvila. This area of the Portuguese capital, which was once characterized by the presence of agricultural and recreational farms, today offers a significant green space that harmoniously integrates into the surrounding urban landscape, preserving a bit of its rural heritage.

Origin and Natural Environment

With an area of approximately 9 hectares, the Vale Fundão Urban Park results from the utilization of an area that escaped the intense urbanization of eastern Lisbon, which began in the 1940s. Over time, while neighboring lands gave way to new constructions and communication routes, this valley maintained its natural character, transforming into a green lung. The park stands out for its wide clearings and dense tree cover, inviting contact with nature in the heart of the city.

Plant Biodiversity

The flora of Vale Fundão Urban Park is notable for the predominance of native and Mediterranean-type species. It is possible to observe a grove of Pinus pinea, commonly known as stone pine, located east of the play area. Further south, a meadow reveals an alignment of Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra var. italica). Towards the east, groves of ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia) are found, and Judas trees (Cercis siliquastrum) and oleanders (Nerium oleander) also appear. Other species, such as the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua), the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris), and the tamarisk (Tamarix africana), contribute to the park's botanical diversity, offering a visually rich pathway.

Spaces for Activity and Relaxation

The park is equipped with various infrastructures designed for visitors' leisure and outdoor activities. It features a multi-sports court, allowing for the practice of different sports, and a children's playground, suitable for the enjoyment of the little ones. One of the elements that enrich the landscape is the presence of a fountain, adding a touch of freshness and tranquility. For gatherings or small cultural initiatives, there is also a small amphitheater, making the Vale Fundão Urban Park a versatile location for different types of activities.
