Located in the city of Lisbon, in the parish of Marvila, this remarkable historical structure is discretely situated in Largo de Chelas, in the Bairro dos Alfinetes. Its position in this urban context allows one to observe the coexistence of an ancient monument with centuries of history and the dynamics of Marvila's contemporary landscape.
The history of the site where the Church of Chelas stands is truly millennial, with evidence dating back to ancient Roman and Visigothic occupations. Its religious past is particularly rich, highlighted by the reconstruction of the building by the Mozarabic community as early as the 10th century, testifying to a continuous presence of faith and worship on this site over the centuries.
Visitors can appreciate the most significant architectural elements of the complex: the Manueline portal and the galilee (or porch preceding the main entrance). Due to their unquestionable value, these elements have been classified as a National Monument since 1930, acknowledging their historical and artistic importance. In the early 17th century, specifically in 1604, the adjoining convent underwent a significant reconstruction, becoming home to regular nuns of the Order of Saint Augustine and being dedicated to Saint Felix and Saint Adrian.
Throughout its existence, the monastic building has undergone various transformations and adaptations, serving at different times as a gunpowder factory. Currently, the former convent of Chelas houses the Army General Archive, preserving documents of historical relevance to the country. Despite these changes, the church maintains its original function, continuing to be a place of worship and operating under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Lisbon. Recently, in September 2019, the convent complex was included in a list of military buildings to be sold off, as published in the Diário da República, indicating potential future developments for this heritage site.
