The Church of Santa Maria, also known as the Mother Church of Loures, stands prominently in the municipality of Loures, in the district of Lisbon. It is located in the historic center of the town of Loures, establishing itself as a cultural and religious landmark in the local urban landscape.
The construction of this remarkable temple began in the mid-15th century, on the foundations of an older medieval church that had historical connections to the Knights Templar. Over the centuries, the building has undergone various interventions and modifications that have contributed to its current appearance, most notably the construction of its imposing bell tower, which dates back to the final years of the Philippine Dynasty.
After the devastating earthquake of 1755, the church suffered extensive damage and remained in a state of neglect for a considerable period. However, in the 19th century, it underwent a meticulous restoration that returned it to its former splendor. The formal recognition of its historical and cultural importance was sealed in 1910, when the Church of Santa Maria was classified as a National Monument, consolidating its status as a valuable heritage to be preserved.
The architecture of the Church of Santa Maria is distinguished by its three-nave layout, where the arches are harmoniously supported by Tuscan-style columns, giving the interior a sense of spaciousness and balance. One of the original pulpits is still integrated into one of the columns, representing a unique testament to the temple's original elements.
Inside, the main chapel houses a magnificent 18th-century altarpiece, which stands as a remarkable example of Portuguese Baroque. This artistic piece, rich in detail and expressiveness, substantially enriches the ornamentation of the sacred space, inviting a close observation of the craftsmanship of the era.
