The Verney Municipal Bookshop-Gallery is located in the Historic Urban Centre of Oeiras. This positioning provides it with a setting in the oldest part of the locality, integrating it into an area of character and tradition.
Located in Oeiras, its central position within the municipality makes it an accessible cultural landmark for those exploring the town and its heritage.
Inaugurated in May 1995, the Verney Municipal Bookshop-Gallery was established with the mission of being a meeting point between literature and plastic arts. Its opening was attended by notable figures such as the writer David Mourão-Ferreira and the sculptor Francisco Simões, immediately marking its vocation for cultural promotion.
Over the years, the space has hosted various initiatives, from book launches and art exhibitions to cultural gatherings, solidifying its role as a dynamic centre for cultural activities in the municipality of Oeiras.
Since 2008, the Verney Municipal Bookshop-Gallery has been home to the Neves e Sousa Collection. This valuable collection was donated by the widow of the painter Albano Neves e Sousa to the Municipality of Oeiras, significantly enriching the cultural offerings of the venue.
The Neves e Sousa Collection is the driving force behind various events dedicated to multicultural issues and diversity of expression. In particular, the gallery has excelled in promoting Afro-Brazilian cultures, establishing itself as a privileged space for dialogue and exchange between different cultural heritages.
In close connection with the Municipal Libraries of Oeiras, the Verney Municipal Bookshop-Gallery values books and reading as fundamental pillars. It is committed to providing knowledge and fostering an informed and critically-minded citizenry.
The venue maintains an active dynamic around literature and illustration, serving as a point for acquiring literary works and a stage for exploring new talents in visual arts, with a continuous focus on the cultural education and enrichment of its visitors.
