The Praça 25 de Abril is located in the parish of Marvila, more precisely in the Poço do Bispo area, in Lisbon. The square's name is a clear tribute to the Carnation Revolution, which took place on April 25, 1974, and marked a decisive moment in Portugal's history by restoring democracy. The choice of this denomination underlines the profound significance of Freedom Day for the country.

The inauguration of the square took place precisely on April 25, 1999, twenty-five years after the historic date, reinforcing its role as a space for memory and celebration of the values of freedom.

The Central Sculpture

In the heart of the square stands a sculpture of a contemporary nature, by the visual artist José de Guimarães. This work is a tribute to the builders of Lisbon, symbolizing the strength and work of those who have built the city over the centuries.

The statue features vibrant colors, green and red, which allude to the colors of the Portuguese flag. The figure is often interpreted as a reclining female representation, contemplating the Tagus River, connecting the city's identity to its relationship with the river.

A Renewed Urban Space

The Praça 25 de Abril was created on land that once belonged to the old War Material Factory. Its opening to the public represented an important intervention in the urban landscape of Poço do Bispo, transforming an area with an industrial past into a space for conviviality and reflection.
