Category: Civil Architecture > Palace

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Santos-o-Velho

Location

Situated in the historic area of Santos-o-Velho, in Lisbon, the Palácio dos Condes de Óbidos stands on an elevation once known as "Rocha do Conde d'Óbidos". Its privileged position offers a stunning view over the Tejo River, encompassing the Rocha and Alcântara docks, and the landscape of the south bank, where the 25 de Abril Bridge, Christ the King, Almada, and Cacilhas stand out. The palace is accessible from the Jardim 9 de Abril, a green space that complements its grandeur.

A Residence with Deep Historical Roots

The construction of this remarkable palace dates back to the 17th century, at the initiative of D. Vasco de Mascarenhas, the first Count of Óbidos. Over the centuries, the property has been the scene of various experiences and transformations. In 1919, the building was acquired by the Portuguese Red Cross, becoming its national headquarters since 1940. This change of ownership marked a new phase in the palace's life, and it was classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest) in 1993, recognizing its significant historical and artistic value.

Interestingly, the palace has had varied uses over time, hosting, for example, the English Club and the Portuguese Academy of History. During World War II, it even served as a field hospital for prisoners, a testament to its role in crucial historical moments.

Artistic Treasures in Every Room

The interior of the Palácio dos Condes de Óbidos is a true repository of art and history. The highlight is the profusion of tile panels, many of which date from the 18th century or imitate this style, with vibrant colors and diverse themes. On the main facade, we can admire blue and white tile figures that welcome visitors.

The various rooms of the palace reveal narratives through their decoration. The Dining Room, for example, displays palatial scenes. The Sala D. João de Castro dazzles with tiles representing the military triumphs of the Viceroy of India, inspired by famous tapestries. Rooms such as the Parábolas and Mitologia feature mythological and biblical allegories. Outside, on the terrace, a notable tile panel by Jorge Colaço illustrates the arrival of the first Europeans in Brazil. The palace's library, rebuilt in 1935, surprises with a grand crystal chandelier and a ceiling painting evoking the "Peace of Alvalade". The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in turn, preserves ancient polychrome tiles and marble inscriptions that narrate its noble history.
