This imposing monument is located on Avenida da Liberdade, one of Lisbon's most emblematic and grand arteries. Situated on the western side of the avenue, near the intersection with Rua do Salitre, it is set within a landscaped area, offering a point of contemplation in the heart of the city. Its central position makes it visible within the vibrant urban environment of the capital.
The idea for the construction of this monument was conceived on April 9, 1920, a date marking the anniversary of the tragic Battle of La Lys, one of the most significant moments of Portuguese participation in World War I. Its fundamental purpose was to honor the Portuguese combatants who lost their lives in this conflict. The first stone was laid on April 9, 1923, by the then President of the Republic, António José de Almeida, actualizing the nation's desire to remember its heroes.
Inaugurated on November 22, 1931, the monument is the result of a collaboration between architects Guilherme Rebelo de Andrade and Carlos Rebelo de Andrade, with the sculptural ensemble created by Maximiano Alves. Built of stone, with a subtle bronze accent, it presents a monumental expression. The central composition features a female figure symbolizing the Homeland, holding the flag of victory and crowning a kneeling soldier. Laterally, two male figures, with notable effort, support the representation of the Homeland, evoking the vigor and strength of the Portuguese in service of the nation. At the base, the inscription "In the service of the Homeland, the effort of the People" summarizes the tribute paid.
The Monument to the Dead of the Great War transcends its merely commemorative function, establishing itself as a remarkable piece of urban public art. The realism of the figures and the intrinsic symbolism of each element invite reflection on the history and sacrifices of a people. It is a place that continues to be the setting for ceremonies and evocations, keeping alive the memory and importance of the events that inspired it, constituting a visible link to Portugal's past.
