Location

The Chapel of São Sebastião is located in the heart of the Paço do Lumiar urbanisation, in Lisbon, a place that maintains the charm of an ancient historical centre. Uniquely positioned in the middle of a public road, this chapel stands out in the local urban landscape, surrounded by residences that attest to its integration into the community over the centuries.

A Centenary Heritage

Dating back to the 16th century, the foundation of this chapel is due to the devotion and the need felt by the population of old. It was erected as a plea for protection to the martyr saint Sebastian, at a time when the plague threatened the life and health of the inhabitants. Since its origin, the temple has belonged to the people, a testament to its community importance and the faith that drove it. Its historical and architectural relevance was officially recognised with its classification as a Property of Public Interest in 1967.

Harmony of Styles and Materials

The architecture of the Chapel of São Sebastião reveals an interesting dialogue between different eras. Its main facade features a Manueline portal, which stands out for its simple lines and subtle vegetal ornaments, evoking its foundational period. However, the chapel underwent various renovations over the centuries, which added additional elements. On the rear facade, for example, a Baroque-style pediment and a simple azulejo processional cross can be observed, lending visual richness to the building's exterior.

The Splendour of the Interior

Inside the chapel, the art of azulejos takes on notable prominence. The walls of the nave are entirely covered with "carpet" type azulejo panels, featuring polychromatic patterns from the 17th century, creating a visually rich environment. In the chancel, the eye is captivated by figurative azulejos in blue and white tones, dating from the first half of the 18th century and attributed to Master P.M.P., which depict episodes from the life of Saint Sebastian. The triumphal arch separating the nave from the chancel is decorated with late Baroque paintings, displaying figures of putti, gargoyles, and vegetal elements. Curiously, flanking this arch, are two "trompe-l'oeil altarpieces" in azulejo from the late 17th century, with representations of Saints Peter, Paul, Francis, and Anthony. The space is further enhanced by beautiful marble and limestone inlays of various colours, adorning niches and the main altarpiece, highlighting the craftsmanship of the era's artisans. The floor of the nave reveals an element of great historical interest: several tombs with ancient inscriptions, some with coats of arms, which tell the story of benefactors and figures associated with the chapel over time.
