Leião is located in the parish of Porto Salvo, within the municipality of Oeiras. This area is distinguished by its urban organization, composed mainly of low-density housing. Over the centuries, its development has closely followed the main communication routes of the area, resulting in an expansion that formed a continuous urban fabric with the neighboring locality of Talaíde.
Leião's history has its roots firmly established in the 16th century, with the first documentary reference to this place dating back to 1582. Its evolution was closely linked to the road network of the time, which facilitated its initial growth. Subsequently, a significant demographic increase, noticeable from the 1960s onwards, drove considerable territorial expansion, consolidating Leião as an integral part of Oeiras's urban landscape.
Leião's subsoil holds traces of human presence extending over a vast temporal period. Archaeological investigations have revealed an occupation dating back to the second half of the third millennium BC, associated with the Bell Beaker culture. These findings consist of concentrations of ceramic materials and other evidence, indicating the existence of a prehistoric residential nucleus. On top of these older layers, evidence of a later Roman occupation was also discovered, which established itself in the same area, demonstrating the persistence of this location's attractiveness and importance throughout millennia of history.
