Largo Coronel Mata Pereira is located within the Madre de Deus neighborhood, a residential area that is part of the Beato parish in the city of Lisbon. This square is situated in an urban zone characterized by a cluster of housing built in the mid-20th century, which lend the location an atmosphere of a traditional and tranquil neighborhood, far from the hustle and bustle of the capital's more well-known tourist routes.
The square's name is a tribute to Arthur Xavier da Matta Pereira (1887-1944), a military Colonel whose career was significantly linked to the Directorate of Military Maintenance, headquartered in the Beato parish itself. The designation of this public space, established in 1950, was part of an initiative to name the streets and squares of the Madre de Deus neighborhood, which until then were identified only by numbers. Thus, the square evokes a figure who contributed to the country's military history and became part of the neighborhood's local memory.
Largo Coronel Mata Pereira presents itself as a simple and functional space within the urban fabric of the Madre de Deus neighborhood. Its configuration reflects the concern for planning and community living characteristic of the social housing projects of the era in which it was established. It offers a point of reference within an essentially residential area, inviting a more authentic and serene perspective of Lisbon's daily life.
