Situated in the Mercês area of Lisbon, Largo Agostinho da Silva is surrounded by streets named Marcos Portugal, Monte Olivete, and Professor Branco Rodrigues. Its location lends it a tranquil atmosphere, characteristic of a more secluded part of the city, yet still integrated into the urban fabric. It is a space where one can feel the discreet pulse of a traditional Lisbon neighborhood.
Largo Agostinho da Silva was inaugurated in November 1996, dedicated to a central figure in Portuguese culture: George Agostinho Baptista da Silva (1906-1994). A philosopher, university professor, researcher, and also a novelist and poet, Agostinho da Silva stood out for his uncompromising defense of individual freedom and freedom of thought. He spent a large part of his life in Brazil, returning to Portugal in 1969. This square symbolizes his deep conviction in the importance of humans being uninhibited creators, free from external impositions, an ideal that guided his entire work and life.
This square offers an environment of serene beauty, inviting pauses and contemplation. Characterized by the presence of trees, the architecture of the surrounding buildings, and natural lighting that enhances its colors and textures, the space is pleasant and harmonious. It is an example of how urban life can coexist with pockets of tranquility, providing a picturesque setting for those seeking a moment of rest or a simple stroll through the city streets.
