Located in Lisbon, in the vibrant area of Paço do Lumiar, Jardim Quinta Nossa Senhora da Paz is part of an environment that preserves the character of old noble properties of the capital. Situated on Estrada do Paço do Lumiar, this green space offers a haven of tranquility within the urban context, inviting a pause from the city's rhythms.
Originally known as Quinta do Caracol, the property was transformed and enriched in the early 20th century. Between 1929 and 1934, under the direction of Herbert Edward Over Guilbert, an English businessman with ties to the Sacavém Pottery Factory, the estate gained its current configuration. It was during this period that the palace and garden underwent significant remodeling, elevating their artistic and landscape value.
One of the most striking features of the estate is its rich azulejaria (tilework). The tiles that adorn the outer courtyard, walls, and house facades were produced at the renowned Sacavém Pottery Factory. Designed by H. C. Sant'Anna and A. Ribeiro, these panels offer a visual spectacle of colors and patterns, with figurative representations in monochrome blue on a white background, recounting rural scenes and historical themes. The presence of these decorative elements lends the ensemble a unique and highly beautiful character, visible in details such as the azulejo-covered benches.
The garden's design is the work of Jacintho de Mattos, a prominent landscape architect and horticulturist from Porto. Conceived in terraces, the garden presents a succession of distinct environments. Near the house, there is a formal garden, with symmetrically laid out boxwood flowerbeds and a small azulejo-covered fountain, subtly evoking a southern character, with Hispano-Moorish inspiration. Two imposing palm trees and a dragon tree contribute to this atmosphere. On a lower level, a reinforced concrete pergola shapes a formal and regular space, leading to a classically shaped water mirror, flanked by two large cycads. Further on, a park area with winding paths and a naturalized lake offers a more informal and serene environment, where some tree specimens stand out, including a large eucalyptus tree.
Since 1974, Quinta de Nossa Senhora da Paz has been part of the heritage of the Lisbon City Council, making it accessible to the public. The garden is a pleasant place for tranquil walks and moments of rest, providing a green refuge for Lisbon's residents and visitors.
