Jardim Poente is located on one of Lisbon's hillsides, in an area with city views. This space is integrated into the westernmost wing of one of the capital's notable historic gardens, the Ajuda Botanical Garden. Its position allows visitors to enjoy a tranquil environment, away from the city center's hustle and bustle, yet accessible within Lisbon's urban landscape.

History and Requalification

Originally, this section of the garden remained incomplete, marking the western limit of the classical layout with a wilder, more wooded area. In the late 1990s, the space underwent a careful intervention. This requalification transformed it, preserving its character while giving it new functions and a renewed aesthetic. The project allowed for the harmonious integration of contemporary elements, such as paved areas and a new landscape design, responding to the need to create a leisure space complementary to the historic garden.

Architectural and Natural Elements

At the center of Jardim Poente, a grass amphitheater stands out, its wide steps covered by a green carpet, inviting repose and contemplation of the landscape. Two imposing trees of the species Phytolacca dioica, known as Ombu trees, were skillfully incorporated into the amphitheater's design, offering a visual focal point and natural shade. The fusion of the built element with the vibrant nature of the trees creates a serene and balanced environment.

The Symmetry of Water

The garden's design is reinforced by a symmetrical water axis that extends, prolonging the Botanical Garden's fountain system. This channel leads to a unique focal point: a circular fountain, where water springs from a single stone. The water flows gently down the stone's surface, glides into the channel, and finally cascades down a staircase that marks the end of the axis of symmetry. This aquatic element not only adds movement and sound to the environment but also emphasizes the space's organization and tranquility.
