Mário Ruivo Garden is located in the riverside area of Parque das Nações, in Lisbon. This space is part of an area of modern urbanism with extensive green and public spaces, conceived for Expo '99. Its location offers a contemporary setting, where proximity to the Tagus River is a striking feature.
Inaugurated in 1998, this garden was initially known as "Water Gardens". Its creation was directly linked to the central theme of Expo '98, the oceans and the importance of water. The space was, therefore, designed to celebrate this vital element through various installations and environments, with both educational and recreational aspects. In May 2018, the Lisbon City Council assigned it its current name, in homage to Mário Ruivo, a prominent figure in the field of oceanography.
Mário Ruivo Garden is composed of several distinct thematic areas, inviting an exploration centered on water. Among them, highlights include the Palm Tree Gardens, the Mediterranean Orchard, Ulysses' Lake, the Waterfall Building, and the Hydraulic Garden. Each section contributes to a journey where visitors can interact with water-related elements, inspired by different historical periods and cultures, providing an immersive experience of discovery.
