The Garcia de Orta Garden is located in the Parque das Nações area, in the eastern part of Lisbon. It is situated on a riverside strip that extends along the Tagus river, integrated into the Passeio das Tágides. This privileged location not only offers views over the estuary, but also creates a mild environment, favorable to the botanical diversity that resides here.
This garden was named in honor of Garcia de Orta, a notable Portuguese physician and botanist who lived in the 16th century. He is recognized for his pioneering studies on flora and its properties, carried out during his stay in India. The garden, created as part of EXPO'98, evokes the period of the Portuguese Discoveries, symbolizing the botanical exchange that enriched knowledge and gardens in Europe with species from distant lands.
The main characteristic of the Garcia de Orta Garden is its rich collection of exotic and tropical flora. The space is designed as a journey through different botanical environments, divided into sections representing various regions of the globe where the Portuguese presence left its mark. This organization allows visitors to discover a fascinating diversity of plants, from the most imposing to the most delicate, such as the dragon tree or the colorful bird-of-paradise.
The Garcia de Orta Garden provides an environment of notable freshness and tranquility, contrasting with the dynamic surroundings of Parque das Nações. It is an inviting space for a peaceful stroll or a moment of rest by the river. The plant diversity and serenity of the place create an atmosphere conducive to contemplation and a closer connection with nature, within an urban context.
