Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Garden

Category: Nature > Garden

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Avenidas Novas

Location

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Garden is located in the Avenidas Novas area, a central district of Lisbon. This green space is integrated into the Foundation's vast complex and is bordered by important thoroughfares such as Avenida de Berna and Marquês de Fronteira and Marquês Sá da Bandeira Streets. It represents an area of tranquility and nature embedded within the consolidated urban context of the Portuguese capital.

An Example of Modern Landscape Architecture

This garden, inaugurated in the 20th century, is recognized as a landmark project in the field of landscape architecture in Portugal. It was designed by landscape architects António Viana Barreto and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, who collaborated on its conception. Its creation took into account the harmonious integration of the Foundation's buildings with the natural environment, leveraging the site's characteristics and creating perspectives that relate to the architectural volumes. The Foundation complex, including its buildings and garden, was classified as a National Monument in 2010.

Natural and Scenic Elements

With an area of about nine hectares, the garden features a naturalistic design, with terrain modeling that creates different levels and clearings. A large, organically shaped central lake is fed by streams, and its naturalized banks host aquatic vegetation. The diversity of flora is remarkable, with a selection that includes native species and some well-adapted exotic ones, distributed across various zones that create distinct microclimates and provide varied environments along the paths. There are also small circular water mirrors, purposefully integrated or even hidden, that offer visual and surprising effects.

A Space for Leisure and Culture

Beyond its natural beauty, the garden was designed as a place for recreation and contemplation. It invites strolls along paths that gradually unfold, moments of rest in the shade or on the expansive lawns. The variety of vegetation and the presence of water attract various bird species, including mallards and herons, enriching the experience of contact with nature. The garden also features an open-air amphitheater, which serves as a stage for cultural events, and hosts various contemporary sculptures strategically placed within the landscape, reinforcing the space's connection to art and culture promoted by the Foundation.
