The Ducla Soares Garden is located in the Restelo area, in Lisbon. It occupies a significant green area between Avenida do Restelo and Rua Pêro da Covilhã. Positioned on a gentle slope, the garden offers, from some points, views over the Tagus River and the nearby riverside area. This perspective allows for observing the historic Belém Tower in the distance, framed within the landscape.
This green space was designed in the 1950s by architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles. Its design took into account the presence of the Hermitage of São Jerónimo, seeking to integrate this historic structure into the garden environment. The terrain features natural slopes, with paths traversing different elevations, creating a sense of a route integrated with the surroundings and the pre-existing architecture.
The garden was named Ducla Soares in tribute to Armando José Ducla de Sousa Soares, a doctor and researcher who lived and worked in Lisbon, with strong ties to the Restelo area. Inside the garden, there is also a statue dedicated to D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. This work, by sculptor Augusto Cid, was inaugurated in 2016 and adds an element of historical and cultural memory to the space.
One of the distinctive elements that make up the garden's environment is the Hermitage of São Jerónimo. This small chapel is integrated into the garden area and represents a point of historical and architectural interest on site. Its presence influenced how the garden was planned, creating a harmonious visual and spatial connection between the religious building and the surrounding nature.
