The Garden of the Seven Castles is located in Santo Amaro de Oeiras, a parish in the municipality of Oeiras. Its implantation follows the proximity of the train line, in an area that historically was situated on one of the elevations flanking the Village of Oeiras, facing the sea, on land once dedicated to agriculture.

This position offers a perspective that alludes to the geographical surroundings of the area, providing a unique setting for its visitors.

Historical Legacy

This garden is an integral part of the vast property known as Quinta dos Sete Castelos, whose history dates back to the late 19th century. The main construction of the estate began around 1899, driven by Waldemar de Albuquerque D’Orey, an entrepreneur with origins on the island of Faial, in the Azores.

The estate, with its garden, reflects a period of rising bourgeoisie and their search for recreational and representative properties, becoming municipal heritage since the year 2000, after being acquired from the heirs of its founder.

Architectural Heritage

Within the Garden of the Seven Castles, some architectural elements stand out, enriching its itinerary. The property includes a palatial house of robust design, which retains its original characteristics from the late 19th century.

To the side of the house, there is a chapel, erected in 1929. This private religious space is notable for its tiles, which adorn both the interior and exterior, originating from the historic "Viúva de Lamego" factory and created by the watercolorist João Alves de Sá. These structures are visible testimonies of the estate's past and its original character.

With a considerable area, encompassing not only flowerbeds but also a pine forest and an orchard, the Garden of the Seven Castles offers an inviting environment for strolling and tranquility. Its paths were designed for fluid circulation, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural richness of the space.
