The Garden of the Palácio da Flor da Murta is located in Oeiras, within the urban area of Lagoal. This location grants it a tranquil atmosphere, presenting itself as a serene space in the heart of the locality. Its presence in the landscape of Oeiras contributes to the cultural and historical richness of the region.
The history of the Garden of the Palácio da Flor da Murta dates back to the mid-16th century, when the property was a vast estate known as "Quinta da Terrugem", under the ownership of an influential family. However, it was in the 18th century that this place gained particular prominence, upon passing to the Meneses family. It was at this time that the palace, and consequently its garden, became linked to the figure of D. Luísa Clara de Portugal, who became known by the nickname of "Flor da Murta". Her connection to the court of D. João V conferred particular notoriety upon the property, driving architectural and landscape transformations that shaped the current appearance of the site. The property also includes a chapel exhibiting a coat of arms dated 1549, and is, by tradition, the place where the renowned Friar Bartolomeu dos Mártires is said to have celebrated mass, adding a dimension of religious heritage to the complex.
The gardens of the Palácio da Flor da Murta constitute one of its most captivating elements, reflecting the landscape art of past eras. Among its distinctive features is a carefully integrated sundial, which combines functionality and beauty. The composition of the green spaces also includes a small lake at the entrance, highlighted by a fountain, and a larger lateral lake, which enriches the aesthetics of the surroundings. These aquatic elements are fed by an ingenious hydraulic system, dating from the 18th century. This complex system, consisting of still visible underground conduits and vents, represented a remarkable feat of engineering in its time, integrating into a regional water supply network that was contemporary with the iconic Águas Livres Aqueduct. Its presence underlines an advanced vision of water management, highlighting the historical and technological value of this location.
